Venus in Jyotishm (Vedic Astrology)

Understanding its Signification – Shukra

Venus is known as “Shukra” in Sanskrit. Its literal translation is semen or the reproductive fluid of a male in Sanskrit. This would give a glimpse of the most important signification of this gruha (loosely translated as planet) – Venus.

Material/Physical Attractions

Venus signifies the physical love, attraction and pleasures of life. Why physical love? Because love in today’s terms is more qualified by lust and loyalty. Such attractions are governed by Venus. The attraction for beauty and beautiful material objects is also governed by Venus.

Shukra

Venus governs semen in males and the uterus in females (not eggs). An affliction in Venus brings down sperm count, impotency, lack of erection, etc. in a male while the inability to nurture a fetus (amniotic fluid), lubrication of the reproductive female organ, aversion to sexual contact, etc in a female.

Wealth

Venus also governs the abundance/opulence. Blessing from Venus or its good placement is an indicator of excessive wealth that brings about a surplus of materialistic gains in an individual. For the same reasons, it is linked with luxury, material comforts and enjoyment of life conveniences.

Attractions

Venus brings in charm, beauty and a shiny body in an individual. Also, an ability to get work done the twisted way without ruffling any feathers (diplomacy) comes into an individual. The story of the Trojan horse could be one such example.

Relationship

Venus is considered to be the advisor to the King (similar to Jupiter) however their qualities are different. As per ancient text, the guru (clumsy translation in English is a teacher) of asuras (loosely translated as demons) is Shukracharya. The name comes because Shukracharya had a boon to revive a person from the dead. Semen has the the same capability to regenerate hence the name Shukracharya. However, Shukracharya used his powers to revive the dead asuras from the battlefield and was an enemy to devagana (Again absurd translation is gods) who continue to fight with Asuras. Summary: Venus enables one to cling to the physical pleasures of life.
